I like Zürich, among others things, for its numerous green spaces. Here, I want to present you with a small park in the city center, where the calm takes over the buzz of the city. Located between the famous Kunsthaus (museum of arts) and the church Grossmünster it is nonetheless a bit hidden and you have to know about it not to miss it. It is not even listed as a park on Google maps! But I promise it is definitely open to the public, from 6 am to 7.30 pm every day.
It is in fact the garden of a Villa, the Villa Tobler, now hosting the Wikelwiese theatre. The Villa was first constructed in 1853 but went through several renovations and the garden evolved with it. There you will find benches to relax among well-trimmed bushes, beautiful statues, and a fountain featuring a golden mosaic and a dragon. Finally, a playground has been added in the 2000s. Both the Villa and the garden are now protected at a cantonal level.
I particularly like the feeling of being in a hidden and beautiful garden of a villa rather than a public park and I definitely pass by it whenever I’m in the area! The streets nearby in the Niederdorf are also lovely and slightly less touristy than the main ones.
