The glow in the meat lover’s eyes
In case my other articles won't show it enough, I'm on a constant search for a good place to eat great BBQ in Zagreb.
One of my late discoveries is Žar, a place in the western part of town in the neighborhood Trešnjevka, which I discovered like many other of my favorite places in the city – by word of mouth. It is mostly known for its three dishes – kebabs, kebabs filled with cheese and a gourmet burger. I really can't give you a tip as to which one is better, so you will have to try it all. You probably won't be able to do it in one visit, as the portions are quite big with affordable prices. It can get really crowded during lunch time, both in the nicely decorated interior and on the large terrace. It might look like a neighborhood café from the outside, but thanks to Mr. Miško, who calls himself "the master of meat", you will get glorious chunks of meat from the kitchen.
Šopska salad is one of the best in town, and lepinja (similar to Greek pita bread) are also commendable. Although it seems like you can choose between wide selections of vegetarian meals, if you take a closer look it mostly comes to grilled vegetables with chimichanga vegetarian as one of the "serious" meals.
I can honestly conclude that this is one of the fundamental Balkan temples of grill, at least in the city centre.
