The Republic Square Metro is a gigantic concrete and tuffa stone flower. It truly is a Soviet masterpiece considering its unique design and build: it is part metro station, part cavern and, once upon a time, part cafe. In the summer months, the large fountain is activated, providing a cool, shady, retreat from the blistering Yerevan heat. During the winter, the area above the fountain allows snow to enter, mimicking a giant snow-globe. It really is too bad that the old cafe closed down, would have been a unique place to grab a drink or refreshment!
Once you enter the flower cavern, you will notice that there is a narrow tunnel that leads to the other side of the street. That tunnel hosts many mom-and-pop shops opened by Armenians from Syria, hence its name, Halebi Shuka (Aleppo Market).
So, be sure to check this soviet modernist treasure out! It is located at the intersection of Nalbandyan and Aram!
