San Michele Cemetery Venice

A forest-like resting place

"San Michele Cemetery is a serene island resting place for icons like Stravinsky and Pound, reflecting Venice's diverse heritage."

While walking along one of Venice’s most famous fondamentas, Fondamente Nove, one’s eye is likely to be caught by a buoyant forest of cypresses, close enough to appreciate the beauty of the decorated walls surrounding them, and yet at a distance that will have one wondering: what am I looking at?

The cemetery of San Michele is not the only graveyard of Venice, but it is by far the most famous one and well worth paying a visit. Reachable in a few minutes from F.te Nove boat stop with numbers 4.1 or 4.2, this beautiful place is a proper journey within history, culture and religion. In fact, the San Michele cemetery, mirroring the cosmopolite nature of Venice, is divided into three sections: the Christian one, the Greek Orthodox one and the Protestant one.

In this cemetery rest many illustrious figures such as Igor Stravinsky and Ezra Pound.
