This lovely hidden garden is nourishing the community and its veggies.
Walking through Benimaclet, I discovered a tucked away land behind a fence. My curiosity led me inside, where I found a garden full of vegetables. The Huertos Urbanos de Benimaclet (Urban Gardens of Benimaclet) is nestled between the city's bustling streets and the Huerta, Valencia's countryside. Gardeners welcomed me and shared the story behind this unique urban gem.
The Huertos Urbanos is a community garden where residents rent small plots and grow vegetables for their use. Parcels are filled with ecologically planted greens: lettuce, carrots, artichokes, beans, cabbage, onions, and spinach. The area is also home to a group of chickens, a duck, and a colony of cats. A wonderful thing about Huertos Urbanos is that it brings neighbours together. There is a communal area with benches, a Moorish oven and a small children's playground. You might catch a Sunday paella or a live band playing, like during the Benimaclet Confusion Festival.
This land was once a dump for construction waste. In 2012, the community took action, clearing and cultivating the area. Today, it's a thriving urban garden, and its beauty and sense of community make it a remarkable place. Unfortunately, its future remains uncertain and is threatened by new building developments.
The garden doesn't have set opening hours. You can drop by anytime you find people working, which is most of the time.
Near the Huertos Urbanos lies the Espai Verd (Green Space), a residential building covered in plants. Want to explore Valencia's agriculture? Read here about la Huerta.
