Just south of where Avenue Road meets Davenport in downtown Toronto, you'll find an abundance of flora and fauna. Not in a field or someones garden, but a stretch of four flower and plant wholesalers that have been in competition for well over a decade - having created a floral bubble in this prestigious neighbourhood.
The four shops (from north to south) - Yang's Flower and Fruit Market, Ken's Flowers on Avenue, Jong Young Flower Market, and Grower's Flower Market & Gifts, are all separately owned, and although many have similar plants for sale, some of them have their specialties.
Most of their pricing is done by stem - allowing patrons to choose a variety of flowers from buckets in order to create their own bouquets. The stores thrive on creating arrangements for weddings and other special events as well, and sometimes you can catch a glimpse of what they're working on.
I've found the prices to be very fair, especially in that there are so many more options than a simple flower boutique - also the choice of house plants, succulents, cacti, and other potted plants are extensive. Most of the shops sell a variety of pots in different sizes, colours and shapes - making it easy to stop by and get everything you need to become a green thumb.
Operating through all the seasons, this a great spot to pick up some fresh flowers for any occasion - to be honest, just walking by this stretch of street always puts a smile on my face.
