Looking to add a pinch of flavourful fun to your Toronto visit? Check out the Soulpepper Theatre Co. Founded in 1998, this play company has grown to become Toronto’s largest not-for-profit stage group. It now operates in The Young Centre for the Performing Arts building situated in The Distillery Historic District.
After my first few tastes of Soulpepper many years ago, I started to feel that it largely staged shows that appealed to a more seasoned theatre-goer. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the classics, but I also wanted to hear from a newer generation of story tellers. Eventually I let my subscription lapse and ventured out to explore other performing troupes across the city.
That changed in 2019 with the hiring of a new Artistic Director. She has promptly shaken up the status quo and blended the company's original vision to also feature: “new works, new forms and innovative practices.” I haven’t been disappointed with a show since her arrival, which suggests they’ve now got the spicing just right for my palate.
What’s Spot On:
• Under 25 years old? You can now get two FREE tickets to Soulpepper. What’s the catch? Nada. It’s just their way of attracting younger folks. Your freebies are good for all same-day performances. Booking starts at 08:00 AM until 90 minutes before that day’s show. Obviously, this offer is subject to availability. Go online for details and to reserve your seats.
• The many bars, restaurants and shops of The Distillery District provide a colourful backdrop to your theatrical experience.
