Just a few meters to the north of Eleftherios Venizelos statue, there is a cultural spot named Romaiki Agora which means Roman Forum. It was built somewhere around 42 B.C. and 138 A.D. In ancient times, it used to serve as the administrative center of the city. Inside the area you can visit an Archaeological Museum, which is located in a basement to the west side of the area.
In the summer time, during the night, there are many young people relaxing and drinking beers outside the Romaiki Agora.
Around the area, you can find many nice places to visit such as the Art Core, a cool cooperative cafe-bar, the Loux cafe, a modern kafenio with an extraordinary chess-style mosaic on the floor, the 'Salumeria del greco' an interesting meze restaurant and the Blues Bar a nice cafe-bar playing blues and soul music.
Since 2012, PIC-NIC Urban Festival is being held in the Romaiki Agora area. The festival is a fresh and a very unique addition to the cultural events of the city! It is organized every year in the last weekend of August and includes live concerts and films in an open-air cinema. This year the feast will be organized from the 27th to the 29th of August. If you are in Thessaloniki these days, make sure you don't miss it!!
