It's a common assumption among the locals that the most beautiful, picturesque and traditional district in the city is Ano Poli, which actually means the Upper Town. Ano Poli is the part of the city that is surrounded by the Walls of Thessaloniki and Olympiados street. Since 1979, Ano Poli has been declared a traditional settlement which basically means that it must be protected.
The narrow cobbled alleys, the steep streets, the old squares and the traditional detached houses, examples of Macedonian architecture, are the fundamental elements of the district. Actually the streets in Ano Poli are so narrow that the normal city bus cannot drive there. In general the district is not very car friendly which is not bad at all!
Tsinari neighbourhood is one of the most prominent and charming parts of Ano Poli and is full of traditional buildings and nice taverns. The feeling that you get when you walk through the alleys of Tsinari is that you're wandering around another city at another time!
In Ano Poli you can visit many nice places such as the The Inglis, Tiho Tiho and Trigoniou Tower a very famous spot for its stunning view.
