Not a vegan myself, I was very intrigued by the sheer joy in my vegan friend’s eye that the Schiedamse Vest would be getting their own Vegan Junk Food Bar. Truth be told, I was a bit sceptical on vegan junk food -- how does that even work? But I was so so wrong, the food is AMAZING!
The interior is cool with graffiti and an industrial look sets the tone. As a non- vegan, I really appreciate having non-vegan servers help giving recommendations. The portions are large to huge, so bring your appetite. The lemon shrimps are tangy, lemony and delicious, and the curry bitterballen are out of this world. The dipping sauces are just the best. Add the Pass the Dutchie as your cocktail of choice and poof, instant happy hour. Especially if you add some banana chips.
The unicorn bread will make you smile or freak you out as the bread is blue with pink aioli, but hey, being colourful never harmed anyone. The kapsalon, the original Rotterdam-invented Dutch snack/meal that are basically loaded fries with cheese and shawarma, has a few vegan twists at the Vegan Junk Food Bar. We went for the flashy kapsalon which is sweet potato fries, vegan cheese, shawarma, jalapenos, carrot, pomegranate, flowers, garlic, onion mix, in other words - heaven. De Sumo burger puts most fast food places to shame.
The food is pretty, colourful, plant-based deliciousness and is a treat for your senses. Off to the gym!
