Torpedo Launch Station Rijeka
Catch it while it's there
If historical ruins are your thing, then this one is not to be missed. The first torpedo factory IN THE WORLD is just a couple-minute ride away from the city center of Rijeka.
It was designed in 1866 and was revolutionary. Until the 1960s, the Torpedo factory was in full power, but like many things in Rijeka, nowadays it operates only partly.
The most interesting part of this complex is the most ruined one: the launch ramp. A big wooden construction piercing through Rijeka’s horizon is a place where you come to feel the past industrial power of Rijeka, enjoy the view over the bay, chitchat with fishermen if they happen to be there, and take amazing pictures.
Because of the columns and creeks, the torpedo launch ramp looks amazing during sunsets. When it’s rainy, it gets a melancholic touch which also makes it a great experience.
Unfortunately, after every stronger storm, the launch ramp collapses more and more, so there is less and less to see, and actually it is not super safe, so only go inside at your own risk.
The torpedo launch ramp is reachable by bus number 8 and it takes you directly there, or bus 1 which will make you walk a little bit and see the neighborhood, which is always a good idea!
