The records sitting in the racks at Vinyl Office seem like someone’s prized personal collection, lovingly organized into categories including Chanson Française, Musiques de Films, Plaisir du Jazz and Musiques du Mondes. The majority of titles then are from French recording artists of the epoch, but also classic film soundtracks, so if that’s your vibe...?!
For hunting more contemporary genres there’s a choice selection of hip-hop, Smurf, Soul, Funk and Reggae. If we’re going to put names to the genres it’s Étienne Daho, the Easy Rider motion picture soundtrack, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Wu-Tang Clan.
In the racks of world and ‘divers’ there are some incredibly rare titles like ‘Liberez Angela Davis Tout de Suite’, of which you’ll instantly get the first words in the title, ‘Tout de Suite’ meaning ‘right now’!! And given the issues of civil unrest right now this title shows that the owner of this collection of records at Vinyl Office is right on the money.
The space is shared with the leather maker Les Brutalistes (Check article on Les Brutalistes), and take the root of that word ‘brutal’. Both the leather maker and vinyl collector are dealing with a material that’s at one time supple and mailable, and once fixed in form create timeless classics.
