There is an old mansion on top of a hill that overlooks Los Angeles basin and the Hollywood Hills. The famous Frank Lloyd Wright for Aline Barnsdall, the wife of an oil tycoon, built the Aline Barnsdall Hollyhock House. The Hollyhock House is the main attraction at Barnsdall Art Park.
Built in 1921, the house has a central courtyard and terraces designed with a "Mayan" appearance. The Mayan Revival architectural style gives the house lots of open spaces and livable feel for such a large mansion. The original goal of this park was for a home, a theatre, and an art gallery.
I attended the Contemporary art gallery at the park as part of a city wide Art project by LAXART. The gallery participates in local art events as part of the Los Angeles County of Arts.
Events range from outdoor festivals and lectures. The art gallery is free. There are film screenings and special guest lectures. Local families take their children here for family friendly art and cultural events - I came to the park for SantaCon where we dress up like Santa.
I like the beautiful view of Los Angeles from this lovely house.
The Hollyhock House is open once more. LA Municipal Art Gallery and the park are open to visitors. Both have many events!
Barnsdale Park is open for "Walk Wright In" Self-guided Tours.
Check out the calendar for events.
L.A. Medical Center Certified Farmers' Market every Monday: 11am - 4pm.
