Katmando Bar is a secret gem on Porthaninkatu in Kallio. It’s located a bit hidden above the Saiturinpörssi discount store (take stairs outside), but it's worth discovering! While Nepalese cuisine has long established its status in Finland, you still won’t find Nepalese bars. Small and cozy Katmando Bar, run by the warmhearted and welcoming Udeep Joshi and his crew, is a lovely exception!
When you enter, you will be impressed with the bohemian, hippy visuality it holds in details, which make you fascinated to take a closer look. It is also the kind of place that you never know if there’s basically anyone around or if it's fully alive with people. Occasionally there might be a small acoustic concert or people having a FIFA tournament on PlayStation. It can be anything, but that’s the beauty of it! The same goes for the music they play, which is not necessarily always what I would personally choose, but still interesting without exceptions.
Besides the moderately priced drinks, Katmando Bar serves the very best momos of Helsinki (meat or veggie)! So in autumn 2021 they even opened another similar place offering even more food on Iso-Roobertinkatu in Punavuori! The good thing is also the multicultural ambience and all the interesting people you will meet there. I have personally made friends with Nepalese musicians, Brazilian football fans and Kallio poets here, among others. You will never know in advance, but I warmly recommend going to check it out whenever you are around!
