L'Abbate is hidden in a backyard in Offenbach but very much worth the pilgrimage from Frankfurt. Expect a long queue on Saturdays with nice people happy to tell you why they have come from far and are in line for... simply cheese! Because that is what the L'Abbates are well known for!
Mozzarella, ricotta, scamorza - that's it. All homemade every day from fresh organic milk in the tiny factory next to the even tinier store. They also have (excellent!) other cheese, but only the aforementioned three are homemade in heaven. My favorite is the ricotta, the one which comes pre-baked with herbs. I suggest slicing it, frying it in a pan and serving it as is! Wunderbar!
The lovely people at L'Abbate, original Italians, are charming and warmhearted - they take a moment to smile and chat, even if the line outside goes long. They will never get tired of giving you tips on how to prepare the cheese. You can see that they love what they do... and I love it too!
