Where in Copenhagen do you go if you wish to have an affordable meal that is healthy, hearty and nourishing in a cozy and vintage surrounding? Well, truth be told there are many such places here in Copenhagen. One of the places I stumbled upon by accident is Madglad, situated in the wonderful, picturesque Vesterbro. Situated on a side street to the infamous and formerly dodgy street Istedgade, Madglad has colorful signs on the outside and is surprisingly spacious on the inside, where you can easily come as a larger group and still find seats for everyone.
The concept is straightforward: what I usually get is the 'Dagens ret', dish of the day. Here you get some kind of warm hearty dish, sometimes containing meat, but there is often both a meat and a vegetarian option. This is what you get at the counter; inside the restaurant there is a large buffet packed with filling salads made of the best vegetables. You'll also find hummus, tzatziki and other delicious side dishes as well as lots of bread.
Madglad also does takeaway, but part of the experience here is the cozy restaurant that feels more like a living room taken out from a home in 1970s Denmark. I get a sense of nostalgia and warmth when I step inside. I feel like visiting my grandparents, although I doubt they would serve hummus.
Come to Madglad for the tasty and cheap food and most importantly the cozy atmosphere!
