Grand Teatret, as it is called in Danish, is a spectacular blend of coffee or lunch place and cinema theater. Its beautiful decor is the reason for visiting it alone, but the good prices make it even more appealing. It generally presents artsy movies and quite a few foreign ones, and it also hosts festivals like the French Cinema Festival or the German Cinema Festival.
The only downside for movie lovers is that it doesn’t offer popcorn (strange for a cinema, I know), but there is a variety of other things to purchase. Coffee or lunch can be supplemented by books you can borrow during your stay, listening to the City Hall clock ringing every now and again, a sound from another era!
There is also an outdoor area for better acoustics, but unfortunately, with no heaters, it is not the best choice for winter, even for smokers. Last but not least, for people with limited mobility, please note that there is only one toilet on the ground floor — the rest are located in the basement, where you have to follow a pretty steep staircase and no elevator available.
Overall, though, if you are in the city centre, it is definitely worth a visit, even if just for a quick filter coffee with a free refill! Bonus: if you go for a film between 9:00-10:30 PM you get free coffee or tea!
