Thirsty after a visit to Gurten Hill? A tiny little brewery hidden 5 min away from the cable car might help you solve this problem. Wabräu is open (almost) every Friday evening. It's not your trendy hipster brewery - if you're into that, head into the city for Barbière, On Tap or Au Trappiste. I prefer the classical, down to earth, ultra-local style of Wabräu though.
Founded by a couple of friends over two decades ago, Wabräu has managed to build a respectable crowd of regular customers. The ambiance is laid-back, and the menu is tiny (basically Beer, Bretzels and Saussage). It is hidden in the brew house of the old Gurten brewery complex. The grand old brewery has been bought and closed by the giant multinational beer companies. But you'll find relicts of that time all over the area now transformed into pricy housing.
Pro tip: On your way home, either go back in the direction of the Gurtenbahn station and visit the old Tavern that was once attached to the Gurten brewery - now a vibrant cultural hub called Heitere Fahne. Or you leave the brewery area in the opposite direction, where a small staircase will lead you through a wonderfully wild garden area. Some of the hobby gardeners there are still Italian guest workers who once worked at the grand brewery.
