Every now and then, when I go out with my friends and we're in the mood for a good beer in a cool place, we head to Seestraße in Wedding and visit the Osram Höfe. The name comes from the German light bulb manufacturing company, OSRAM, which used to occupy these buildings. Höfe means courtyards in German, and there are several of them. Every time I'm here, I have to wander around to find the right one.
This place was a light bulb factory for decades, but in 1997, it was sold for a small fortune and converted into business and office spaces. In one of the hidden courtyards, you'll find the Vagabund Kesselhaus, a Berlin craft beer brewery that comes alive at night in contrast to the surrounding offices. Not only its industrial vibe is a magnet for this place, but also the great selection of beers you will find here — there are 16 taps of beer to choose from. As you can imagine there is more than enough space, so they brew their own beer here. Every Thursday and Saturday, you can take a tour of the almost 100-year-old Kesselhaus — boiler house, taste various beers and see for yourself how the beer is made.
