Strolling through Treptower Park, you'll be surprised to find, seemingly out of nowhere, a colossal 12-meter bronze statue silently hidden among the trees. The statue depicts a soldier cradling a child and holding a lowered sword over a shattered swastika. It is part of the Soviet War Memorial, a cemetery and army memorial dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in the battle to take Berlin and destroy National Socialism at the end of World War II. The memorial is one of three Soviet memorials in the city (the others are in Tiergarten and Pankow) and, when built in 1949, was the largest of its kind outside the Soviet Union.
Due to its somewhat hidden location, it’s always very quiet here with few people around. It’s a great place for a peaceful walk and to admire the grandeur of Soviet architecture. I always feel very small whenever I visit.
A trip to the memorial can be combined with a pleasant walk through the beautiful Treptower Park, one of Berlin's most beloved green spaces, which runs along the River Spree. And there's no better way to end your visit than at one of the beer gardens at the edge of the park, overlooking the river.
