Boxhagener Platz, or "Boxi" as the locals affectionately call it, is the heart and soul of the Friedrichshain neighborhood. This lively square is surrounded by bars, restaurants, and cafés, with a small park at its center where, in the warmer months, people gather to enjoy a drink, chat, play music, and bask in the sunshine. The square becomes even more vibrant on weekends with two of Berlin’s most beloved markets.
On Saturdays, there’s the food and farmers' market, where you can stock up on fresh vegetables and fruits from nearby farms, artisanal bread, locally produced cheeses, honey, and other delicacies. You'll also find a variety of food and café stalls offering a wide range of tasty treats to satisfy every craving.
On Sundays, it’s the flea market, offering everything from old furniture, dusty paintings and colorful carpets to quirky trinkets, vinyl records, vintage clothing, and all sorts of pre-owned treasures. It’s a fantastic place to hunt for unique finds at affordable prices — just be ready to haggle a bit. Coming here on Sundays has almost become a ritual for me: coffee in hand, strolling through the different stalls on the lookout for hidden gems. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don’t, but it’s always great fun!
Both markets take place from roughly 10:00 to 16:00, but especially for the flea market, it’s best to arrive early to beat the crowds and catch the best bargains.
