Besides visiting local places when I travel, I also like to go to local events. When I first moved to Barcelona, those were the first things I looked for. Being a fan of art in general and modern art especially, I stumbled upon CCCB. It is the center of contemporary culture of Barcelona and it is located right next to the MACBA museum and many other interesting attractions (see Joaquin Costa street).
The CCCB does not have permanent exhibitions, instead, they have one every few months and they organize many events depending on the theme of said exhibition. The last one was "Feminisms" which showed the steps feminism has gone through since the 70s and the first participants of the movement. The expo is over now but you can still catch some theme-related workshops or talks.
The current one is called Mars, the red mirror. It is an amazing experience as it shows the planet Mars from a scientific point of view as well as its portrayal in art and literature.
Make sure to save some time for the center's bookshop and be prepared to spend some money, since it has a lot of interesting books and souvenirs to bring back home. And also the best day to visit is Sunday after 15:00, since the entrance is free.
